Double glazing now better investment than a bond 18/08/2010

Did you know that 20% of the heat from your central heat is lost through the windows?  That’s why British homes have as much impact on the climate as all the fuel-burning cars, buses and lorries on the road. Double glazing your home will cut your CO2emissions by around 740kg a year - that's over 8 times as much CO2 as switching to the very best green electricity tariff - and save you a tidy sum on bills.
It’s not only the heating bills you save but all the painting of the windows and doors which needs to be done every 3 years decorators aren’t cheap they all charge around  £150 a day and let’s say its takes 5 days that £750 every 3 years. So why wait, get a quotation now.

Motherwell church to have double glazing 18/08/2010

THE parishioners of a Motherwell church will soon see the results of their fundraising. The building works are all set to replace their old windows with new energy efficient double glazing

Double glazed windows are to be installed in the great hall of Dalziel St Andrew’s soon as part of the church's alteration project.

Church member Alex Baird said: "A year ago we were concerned about the church's heating bill which was rising each year plus the church is very cold and drafty so in view of this we commissioned an energy survey and asked his advice. It was suggested that double glazed windows   and a new heating system to be installed would reduce our heating bills and keep the church warm.

We think that this is a very sensible way to deal with this common problem  having double glazed windows fitted plus a new heating system, the church is undergoing other alterations and will be money well spent reducing their carbon foot print

Security Double Glazed Windows and Upvc Doors 18/08/2010

Around one percent of houses in the midlands each year are burgled each year. That’s a bit too close for comfort just count the houses in your road to see.
One step we can all take against becoming a victim of increasing crime is by increasing the security to our homes. The most common entry point for an intruder tends to be weak windows and doors. One of the most secure windows is a good quality Upvc double glazed window; they have multiple locking systems which mean the window locks at 3 points. This type of window puts off any opportunist burglar.
The strongest door you can buy is a composite door. The reinforcements on these type of door is 1st class just search on YouTube and you will see the difficulty a would-be burglar would have to break through a composite door compared to a non reinforced door.
People have passed comment that composite doors are expensive when comparing the cost of a light weight Upvc. Well that is true but it’s what you are buying one is a quality reinforced door the other is a flimsy Upvc door, for the extra money you have total peace of mind when you are out. With the cheaper doors if you were to be broken into, you could encounter damage to your home, loss of goods, stress this must outweigh the extra cost of a secure composite Upvc doors.

The wrong double glazing 06/04/10

The old timber windows the small church were worn and rotten, the congregation were determined to change them as they were unsightly and let in the weather, they thought the only way forward was to change them to uPVC double glazing. They obtained a quotation from a local company (who never enquired to the local authority about installing new uPVC windows or advised the church of a possible problem) and instructed then to carry out the work of removing the rotten windows and to install new uPVC double glazing.Church
What nobody knew was that the 19th century Church was grade 2 listed as special architectural or historical interest, and the only windows acceptable would be timber windows exactly as before and not the 21 century uPVC double glazing which would have been cheaper.

Listed: Thornhillhead Church is a srevite of special interest

After 10years of arguing, the church has now been told to remove the uPVC double glazing and install  timber windows and glass identical to the original at a cost of £30,000

The verdict was met with anger by the congregation of the small Devon church, who state the structure is ordinary and should never have been listed in the first place. Tell that to the judge

Double glazing a boost from solar chimneys 30/03/10

We all know that double glazing improves the insulation of houses in the winter months by keeping the heat within the house therefore saving energy and fuel bills.double glazed solar chimney
But what happens during the summer? Conservatories get hot due to solar gain
For the periods during the summer temperatures increase so it makes sense harvest this heat from conservatories, double glazed windows and other areas of the home and redistribute it to cooler areas and the hot water system.
A company based in Cambridge called “The energy crowd” has seen this wasted energy and have invented a device called a solar chimney, which could boost the double glazing industry.
The solar chimney is also double glazed which works on the principle of a chimney being fixed to a building, heat can be collected from the areas of the house which have surplus heat. The solar chimneys are constructed in such a way that they also collect their own solar warmth in fact in winter the top of the chimney can reach 40 deg C.
After the big freeze of 2009/10 where the people paid high fuel bills this system must work hand in glove with double glazing.

Back in the 70’s &  80’s this show attracted a vast amount of followers eager to see what was on offer from electric tin openers to the latest in double glazing, Diy was all the rage and people had large amounts of disposable income to spend.
Today tells a different story the popularity of the show has dropped off over the years as the public have less disposable income to spend on luxury items such as conservatories and the latest double glazing, a lot of home improvement companies are reluctant to spend large of amounts of money on this exhibition as they find its very difficult to get a return on their outlay, there is even talk that this may be its last year as the site may be sold to developers.

Double glazing DIY 04/03/10
double glazing
The winter of 2009-2010 has been one of the longest and coldest winters for a long time. A quick and inexpensive way to keep warm and your heating bills low is to fit plastic secondary double glazing.
Many homes have good timber windows which have seen World War II, the harsh winter of 1947 and said no to the high pressure double glazing sales man,
In the UK it’s only cold for about 4 months of the year, although I admit this year has been a bit of a shocker, but as we get older we all feel the cold so perhaps it’s time for a change without inheriting the national dept.
One type of diy double glazing is where a magnetic tape is fixed around the window frame onto which is stuck a plastic sheet by another magnetic strip and bingo double glazing, admit ally it’s not as good as a uPVC double glazed window but it helps keep out the cold and drafts at a fraction of the cost, and you don’t have to be good at diy.
In the UK it’s only cold for about 4 months of the year, although I admit this year has been a bit of a stinker, its March now and the days are getting longer and it’s warming up a bit, but next year? Who knows but why wait to then, have a look on-line and buy a kit just for one window and see how you get on, you never know you may even go into the double glazing business.

Victorian sash windows 01/03/10

Many people with Victorian properties are concerned about their old wooden sash windows as they tend to rattle, let in cold drafts and are not secure, however it’s not difficult to have these replaced with new uPVC sash windows with double glazing which meets to FENSA requirements.sash window
Today’s double glazing is to a very high standard firstly the sealed units will now have low e-glass as standard and in some instances with argon filled sealed units which gives highly efficient double glazing.
All windows have storm proof gaskets which will keep out drafts even in the most severe of winds. Security is also high on the agenda as all the sash windows will have multipoint locks which meet with the insurance requirements.
The frames are made of uPVC which is a ridged plastic and is very hard wearing, never needs painting and will always look like new after a quick wipe over with a damp cloth.
Admit ally there is a capital outlay to start with but the double glazing will serve you well, save you money on fuel bills, therefore good investment for years to come.

Central House gets a Double Glazing facelift 27/02/10

The exterior elevations of this 1977 office building in Harrogate north Yorkshire have been successfully transformed by Structura UK. One of the problems was Double glazinghow to combat solar gain and keep the building cool.  Pilkington’s were consulted who suggested   Suncool brilliant blue, 6 mm glass forming double glazing sealed. This has now given Central House a new bright appearance. The original double glazing in the form of curtain walling had sprung small leaks and was at the end of this life. Structura replaced over 750 vision units with new dual seal, double glazing units of various sizes using special cradles and mini hoists with special glass vacuum lifting equipment. The aged aluminum sections were removed and replaced by over 900 double glazed spandrel panels.

Misty Double Glazing 25/02/10

Misting of sealed units in double glazing is a common problem and most often occurs after 10 years when the guarantee on the double glazing has expired. misty double glazingMisty windows make the window look terrible but replacing the sealed units is no longer problem.
The two panes of glass used in double glazing windows are called sealed units. The two glass panes are kept away from each other by a spacer bar which contains hundreds of tiny silica balls. The same silica balls can be found in tiny bags when you buy electrical goods e.g. a camera or computer.
These silica balls soak up any humidity in the air between the two panes of glass which forms the double glazing.
Should the sealed on the unit breakdown, excessive moisture will build up the silica balls become inundated with moisture and the double glazing will start to mist up.
If you have a sealed unit that misty just contacts the double glazing company who installed the windows and explain what has happened to the sealed unit. They will send a surveyor to inspect the window and give you a quotation if out of guarantee. It takes around 72hrs to make the sealed unit as the glass may require to be toughened. To fit it, the glazer will simply remove the glazing bead from the window remove the defective sealed unit fit the new one and replace the beading
